It’s been almost 3 months since I last shared the best of my Instagram feed with you, so that’s what I am going to do today.
The pictures you’ll find in this list include, as always, pictures taken near bodies of water (what can I say? I am Pisces), at hotels, and at the magical time of sunset.
You’ll also find some aerial photography: pictures taken from tall buildings or from the plane.
I am pleased to share that the very best of these photographs—or at least the ones my followers liked most on Instagram—are of my hometown, Bukoba. You’ll find those pictures at the very end of this list.

No. 37: The End of a Long Hike, Magamba Nature Forest Reserve, Lushoto, Tanzania
Ending a day of hiking through the Magamba Nature Forest Reserve with my soon-to-turn-71 year old mother the day before her birthday.
This view was such a reward after a perilous descent from the Magamba viewpoint which had us trekking backwards on essentially all fours. Where next, Mom?

No. 36: Excursion on Water, Lakeside Escape, Mukono
Finally, we were on the boat to Lakeside Escape. It’s an interesting 45-minute boat ride across Lake Victoria to get there. This is definitely my new go-to water place when I am in Kampala. Good food, great attentive service, wonderful views and a bunch of things to do when you get there.

No. 31: Mount Meru, Tanzania
I have shared pictures of Mount Kilimanjaro before but never of her little sister Mount Meru.
Mount Meru is located 70 km west of Mount Kilimanjaro, just north of the city of Arusha. Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain and the 5th highest mountain in Africa.
This picture was taken from a Fastjet flight through Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA).

No. 30: Happy Birthday to Me!
Cake and wine….what more could a girl want as she turns a year older? Seafood! Which I had in droves because Karambezi Café serves the hugest and best seafood platter in Dar es Salaam. Soooooo worth it!

A lake in the Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda. This lake has neither an apparent inlet nor outlet, it is not a crater lake, and yet its water is fresh.

Crystal-clear, COLD(!), glacier water in the Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda.
At the beginning of last century, the Rwenzori Mountains supported about half the total glacier area in Africa.
100 years later, due to global warming, half those glaciers have melted. The glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains are one source of the River Nile.

No. 20: Uganda Hotels: Wildwaters Lodge, Jinja
It was so nice to be able to appreciate the rapids of the Nile River from the beauty and safety of Wildwaters Lodge on Kalagala Island. The last time I was here, I was in the water just about to fall into a Grade 5 rapid called “The Bad Place”. Such a harrowing experience!

In Dar es Salaam, you don’t have to look hard to find true beauty. This picture was taken at Coco Beach, a public beach, where some of my family had gone to take wedding pictures after my cousin’s church wedding. Those men huddled in a corner are my uncles.

A beautiful picture is made even more beautiful when it is of ones you love. Here, my cousins @art_on_run and @_akanshumbusha_ resign themselves to the fact that our daytrip at Lakeside Escape has come to an end. We didn’t want to get back onto the boat but neither did we want to sail on Lake Victoria after dark (I’ve done that before and gosh is it scary!). @_Kansh_ writes on my blog sometimes. Downtown Dar es Salaam from above. Dar es Salaam is currently the 3rd fastest growing city in Africa and the 9th fastest growing city in the world. And you can feel it too when you live here. Every other day, there’s a new building that comes up where you least expect it.

Arriving home sweet home…about to land in Bukoba, Tanzania (#NoFilter)
The landscape in Bukoba is all about hills and water. I have to admit: I often take Bukoba’s beauty for granted, after all, it’s just “home”. And then I go with someone who’s never been before and I get to see it with a pair of fresh eyes.
It makes me think of a song in our language, Oruhaya, which says: “Our land is beautiful/It was made by the Creator/He made it very sweet/He beautified it/He put hills in it/He put valleys in it/And then poured water over it”

No.1 : Musila Island, Bukoba, Tanzania

Bukoba is on the shores of Lake Victoria. Any view you have of Lake Victoria from Bukoba will invariably also include a view of this chunk of rock known as Musila Island.
When I see Musila Island, my mind runs immediately to a story that’s often told to me whenever I tell any Muhaya that I am of the Kuba clan.
That story is of a Mukuba man who liked to eat.
Apparently in a fit of wishful thinking he uttered out loud: If only Musila Island were a chunk of millet stiff-porridge (oburo) and Lake Victoria milk (both delicacies where I am from)! Hehehe…I guess he was hungry! 
If ever you are in Bukoba, you can boat to Musila Island and climb to the very top. I did this with Kiroyera Tours (who I highly recommend). The view from the top is amazing!
