A 4C taper is a short natural haircut designed to keep the sides and back noticeably shorter while leaving more length and volume on top.

What a 4C taper looks like
The defining feature is the gradual reduction in length around the sides, nape, and often the area around the ears.
The top is left longer, so your natural 4C texture remains the main feature of the haircut.
The taper can be subtle, with only a small amount of hair removed around the edges, or much more pronounced, approaching a fade. A good taper should create a smooth transition rather than an abrupt step from long hair to very short hair.
Because 4C hair can shrink considerably when it dries, the top can look much shorter than its actual stretched length. This is one reason a taper can look particularly sculpted on tightly coiled hair.

However, a taper doesn’t mean 4C hair suddenly requires little care. 4C hair is particularly susceptible to dryness and breakage, so maintaining moisture and handling the hair gently remains important.

The great thing about a 4C taper is that the haircut doesn’t dictate one particular style for the top. You can keep it natural and picked out, define the coils, create finger coils, do a twist-out, or shape the top into a small afro.
