What I like about this article isn’t the typical tourist attraction pointing out but rather the way the descriptions are presented. Everything mentioned point the visitor or tourist in a direction that puts them in the middle of a as close to a native lifestyle as possible while still being able to sight-see and simply spend time gazing at things never seen before. A small town Mwanza must often be judged as a bore by those who know nothing about the city but this is anything but the truth. What caught my eye the most was how it pointed out the cultural center as a focal point of attraction and even gave a video of some of the events that occur there. Another thing I really loved about this article is how it took into account that tourists will have different modes of transportation and gave estimated times for walking distance, taxi, plane, and other public transport. Surely the visitor has a number of options which they can choose from if they wish to check out any of these locations. The attractions themselves range from culturally enlightening to simply beautiful. I, personally, would love to visit every last one of these locations.
Mwanza is a relatively boring ‘city’ I have lived here for over 15 years. Its getting better but still its really is a boring place after you’ve been to the few interesting places … in a day!!

Hola. Gracias por toda tu información. Quiero ir a Tanzania por libre , no me gustan las excursiones, que me recomiendas? Podemos ir independientemente ? Tendrás contacto de un buen guía solo para que nos lleve a los parques? Gracias
Hola García,
Bienvenido/a a Chick About Town.

Hi I took some of the kids of my extended family to Char Ribs a few weeks ago. Yes its a great garden style bar with huge speakers pounding out the beat.
I took the kids during the day as we had heard about there was a beach, unfortunately the water level in Lake Victoria completely covered any beach that might be there. Sorry to say but Char Ribs has nothing on Tunsa for sandy beaches. Also from what I saw at Char Ribs the beach is very small and its muddy ..humna poa for the parasitic snail/worm that lives in the lake.
My kids liked the big dance floor at sun down but as the young guys started hanging around it was time to go.
I’ll post again .. you get a real massage …. not a quick pretend one .. at Clara’s Salon & Boutique located on Pamba Road opposite the old and stinky city markets. The young lady does the real stuff head to toe. I have had massages in Dar where you get the distinct impression that doing the massage isn’t the priority!
Clara has moved her salon to Bantu Street. Same street as fast food place ‘SalmaCone’, Clara’s Salon is at the daladala stage and park end of Bantu Street. She has a great new girl doing massage.
Biche can I leave Clara’s number for you ? Its 0754224211
Thanks for this, Clive. If ever I am in Mwanza and need a massage, I will know where to go! 🙂
Clara’s Salon has moved!
Visit Clara’s Salon, centrally located in Mwanza at the lake/western end of Bantu Street near the park & bus stand. Salma Kone is located at the other end of the street.
Nextdoor to Victoria Bookshop and opposite the National Housing head office.
Just call Clara on 0754224211 or email cmwassa@gmail.com
Hi Clive.
Thanks for the update! 🙂

please give the history of fishing in lake victoria mwanza
Hi Samwel,
Welcome to ChickAboutTown! Unfortunately, I don’t really know much about the history of fishing in Lake Victoria around Mwanza. Is that something you can shed some light on for us?

So here I am, scrabbling around the Internet looking for information on the merits of doing the Serengeti from Arusha versus Mwanza and what do I find but Biche – you sure have been places! And this is a really nice summary of a seemingly “boring” town – certainly gave me food for thought, thanks for sharing!
Hahaha, it’s a pleasure, Vive!
Welcome back to ChickAboutTown. I haven’t seen you here in eons! 🙂
Yes, around East Africa, I have been places! 🙂 I am glad you found something useful on my blog. If you decide to go through Mwanza, I hope you now have some ideas on what you can do while there. It’s a city that has grown on me – nice and quaint! 🙂

Hi Paul,
Welcome to Chick About Town!
Thank you for sharing a link to your website and your phone number.

You have forgotten about Okurewe Island! It’s pretty much off the tracks from most tourist points and probably accomodates only a 2-digit number of tourists every year, but it is a very interesting and inexpensive place and you can see the beautiful island and get an impression of what rural Tansania is like. A good guide is worth every cent as you’ll have problem finding anything on your own. A bike tour is much recommended. I can recommend Paschal as a tour guide (I don’t know if there are other tour guides in the island. Give him a call at (+255 763 480 134).
Hi Martin,
Welcome to Chick About Town and, above all, thank you for your comment!
I have flown over Ukerewe Island but never been on it. When I asked about it, I was told that it was difficult to get to. Was this your experience? How did you get there from Mwanza?
Thanks for all the tips on what to do when in Ukerewe. I am from around Lake Victoria so go to that part of the country often. Now that you tell me it’s worth a visit, I’ll be sure to visit the next time I am in the region. 🙂
Biche
Hi!
You should do that! Getting to the Island from Mwanza is pretty straightforward. There is a ferry running 2 times a day
I’d recommend you get the early one and first class outside deck.
Nice. That sounds so much easier than they had made it sound. I’ll keep you posted about my experience when I finally get there! 🙂
