TANAPA Reservation System
Here’s how the reservation process works with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) for visiting their national parks in Tanzania:
Reservation System & Use
TANAPA has an online reservation and payment system that tour operators and travel agents must use when arranging park entry and services.
When you make a booking through the system you submit information and payment; the reservation itself is considered an offer — it does not guarantee acceptance until TANAPA has confirmed it.
You will find that separate bookings are required for different services: for example, entry permits, campsite reservations, mountain hut stays or park-owned accommodation.
What You’ll Typically Book
- Park entry permits: These cover access to the park for you and your vehicle or group.
- Accommodation inside the park: If you’re staying in a rest house, mountain hut, tented camp or similar in-park facility, you’ll need to book that specifically.
- Special campsites: These are also bookable ahead of time, especially in more remote or less-frequently used sites.
- Vehicle permits: If you are driving into a park (self-drive or via a rental) you’ll need to ensure the correct vehicle permit/entry is in place.
Key Practical Points & Tips
- Even though the online system exists, for self-drive travellers it is often said that there is no strict quota preventing access — you can arrive and pay at the gate in many cases.
- Nevertheless, booking ahead is highly recommended especially for accommodation inside the parks and for busy seasons.
- Make sure you pay attention to supporting documentation: for example non-resident children ages 5-15 may be asked to upload passports or work permits as part of the booking process.
- Confirm accepted payment methods in advance: TANAPA generally accepts credit cards (Visa/MasterCard) for entry fees and permits. Cash may not always be accepted or may be restricted.
- If you are booking via a tour operator, they typically handle the reservation system on your behalf, which simplifies things for you.
- If you want to stay in a mountain hut (for example if you’re hiking) you must book that via the respective park’s online system.
Things To Check Once You Make A Booking
- Confirm the reservation reference number and keep proof of payment.
- Ensure your name, number of people, vehicle registration (if applicable), arrival date and park name are correctly recorded.
- Check whether there are any additional charges (vehicle fee, guide fee, campsite fee) that aren’t included in the base entry permit.
- Verify cancellation or change-policy terms: TANAPA states that making a reservation is a request which they may decline or cancel at their discretion.
- For amenities inside park and private lodges/camps you may have separate booking conditions—make sure your operator confirms these.

For many people in the world, East Africa and safaris go hand in hand.
It is no wonder, therefore, that when people travel to Tanzania, going on safari is a top priority for many.
Unbeknownst to most people, though, Tanzania is the 31st largest country in the world, so if your business to Tanzania takes you to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, going on safari is not necessarily as easy as a quick day trip out of town, unless of course you opt to visit Mikumi National Park. (To be honest, it would be a rushed day trip but would make a perfect weekend getaway.)

Hi Caroline,
Nice to see you on the blog! Still haven’t been to Tanzania? It’s truly lovely. And I am not saying that just because I am Tanzanian. The scenery and landscapes are out of this world. Karibu sana. 🙂

Good morning
Just want to knew the cost of tour guide and also hire vehicle inside the national park because I will be using my transport up mikumi
Hi Mnubi,
Welcome to Chick About Town!
You can find the cost of the tour guide in the post above. I believe it’s US$20 if you are a Tanzanian resident.
I don’t believe you can hire a vehicle from the park directly. You would have to organize that through a tour operator or your hotel. I hired a vehicle through Tan-Swiss Lodge and I believe we paid US$ 100 for the full day.
Good luck, and enjoy your trip to Mikumi when you go.
