In the third post of my “Be My Guide to Your East African City” series, I asked about your favorite local spa. I also mentioned that it dawned on me that I had never been to a spa before, having always received my beauty and body treatments in beauty salons or fitness facilities. Shortly after publishing that post, I was graciously invited by Ramona Kashmiri, the owner of Lemon Spa in Masaki, Dar es Salaam, to visit her spa for the first time and sample some of the treatments offered there. Let’s Talk About Fashion in Tanzania!

Shopping on Congo Street, Kariakoo

In Beauty, Dar es Salaam, Shopping on July 21, 2010 at 04:40

I first became aware of Congo Street in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam on a shopping trip with my Mom, who was looking for granite slabs for her new kitchen countertop. Luckily, on that first foray into hectic Kariakoo (Wikipedia link), I was pleasantly shielded from the chaos because I was in an air-conditioned car. I really wasn’t paying attention for the most part – my main goal that day was to hang out with my Mom – but when we passed a street with hot clothes hanging from every storefront, my attention was aroused. Dreadlock Thoughts

In Beauty, Fashion, Hair on July 21, 2009 at 18:32

Fiesty locsCan I let you in on a secret? Although I absolutely love the look of dreadlocks, I don’t have the patience or the commitment necessary to grow them. It’s true – I’ve tried four times so far and no matter what I do, about six months into the locking process, I simply wash out my locs and do something else with my hair. Still, every so often, I get tempted to try again. As you can probably infer, I am flirting with the idea right now as I write ( :-) ), hence this post.

Want to flirt-with-the-idea along with me? How about it? Today, let’s talk about locs! First, I’ll share with you a little of what I’ve learned on my previous four loc journeys, and then you, by commenting on this post, can share what you know about growing locs. Let’s get started!

First things first, let’s start by talking about the motivation to grow dreadlocks: for those of you who sport locs (or have done so in the past), what was your main reason for beginning to grow your locs? Was it simply about fashion, or did you have a deeper, more meaningful reason to start growing locs? Read the rest of this entry »

Nice & Lovely Petroleum Jelly

In Beauty, Product Reviews on January 23, 2009 at 19:24

Nice & Lovely UnscentedFor all my supposed gistyness, I like to keep it simple when it comes to moisturizing my skin. For me, the secret has always been to use petroleum jelly. I always have a tub of the stuff on my dresser table at home, and believe it or not, I carry a mini-tub of petroleum jelly in my handbag too (I would never think of leaving home without it!). For most of my life, my preferred brand of petroleum jelly was Vaseline, but sometime in 2006, that changed. Read the rest of this entry »

Nail Buffing

In Beauty, How-to on August 19, 2008 at 15:45

Wow! I don’t know what’s going on with my nails, but they are longer, stronger, and prettier than they’ve ever been.  I lie. I do know what’s going on with my nails. Like many other things on my body (understand: my hair), I’ve decided to do away with all the fuss and artificiality with which we normally deal with parts of our body that we consider portrayers of beauty. For me, natural is easier and so is the way I chose to go.

Honestly, I never intended this to be a statement of any sort, at first. The truth is: I can’t keep a manicure intact for more than two days. When I finally came to this realization, I decided to stop struggling with manicures and instead treat my nails more in accordance to what they were by nature. A quick scan of my mental recesses reminded me of a conversation I had with a dear friend back when I was 18. Read the rest of this entry »

Are All Pedicures Equal?

In Beauty, Nairobi, Services on July 14, 2007 at 20:40

Sorry gents, this one might be of interest only to the ladies (though I am aware that nowadays some men also take good care of their feet and nails with pedicures and the like)! Yesterday, I went for a pedicure at my regular ‘local’ beauty salon – and truth be told, I left less than pleased despite my nails having been saved from the raggedy state that they had been in. This brought to mind a pedicure that I had had a little while ago that had me thinking: are all pedicures equal? Read the rest of this entry »
