Craft Market Near Me: Artisan Market Dar es Salaam

The Artisan Market Dar es Salaam is a twice-yearly market held in Dar es Salaam to promote Tanzanian artisans and to support the disadvantaged in creating unique products.

The next Artisan Market will be held on November 30, 2024.

Artisan Market Near Me

If you are in Dar es Salaam and are interested in browsing or purchasing Tanzanian crafts, then I recommend either visiting Mwenge Woodcarvers Market on Sam Nujoma road or The Slipway in Msasani.

Handmade Markets Near Me/Crafts Market Near Me: Art & Craft Market at The Slipway

There are two places to buy crafts at The Slipway: The Souk, in the open area on the ground floor of the tall building at The Slipway, and the crafts market by the inside parking lot.

Many of the stores at The Slipway also sell Tanzanian crafts.

You can also buy crafts on the ground floor of Kariakoo Market, but personally it’s not worth the hecticness unless you are already interested in visiting Kariakoo market or happen to be downtown and so that would be closer.

Art Market Near Me: Tinga Tinga Paintings

If you would like specifically to buy art in Tanzania and want something distinctly Tanzanian, Tinga Tinga art is a style you might be interested in purchasing.

The best place to buy Tinga Tinga art in Dar es salaam is at the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society in Oysterbay (be sure to go to the big hall all the way at the end of the alley).

I personally didn’t like Tinga Tinga art until I went to the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society. There, they produce the most exquisite Tinga Tinga art.

Where do you recommend that people buy Tanzanian crafts in Tanzania? Please let me know in a comment below.

If you are interested in buying kanga, the Tanzanian cloth, you’ll find the widest selection of kangas at the best price on Uhuru Street, east of Bibi Titi Mohammed Street.

Markets in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the largest city and economic hub of Tanzania, making it a significant center for various markets and economic activities in the country.

Here are some key aspects of markets in Dar es Salaam:

  1. Kariakoo Market: As mentioned above, Kariakoo is one of the most well-known markets in Dar es Salaam. In Kariakoo, you can find a wide variety of goods, including clothing, electronics, fresh produce, and household items. It’s a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
  2. Mchikichini Market: This market is famous for its secondhand clothing, often referred to as mitumba. You can find a wide range of used clothing items at affordable prices, making it a popular shopping destination for those on a budget.

When you scan the QR code on the back of a Konyagi bottle, it opens up a text file with the words TZS 468 LN 0129 Konyagi on it.

Presumably, this is a way to verify the authenticity of the product but I am not sure.

I will do some more research and get back to you.
