Here’s what you need to know about using Uber from Johannesburg Airport, including pickup locations, fare estimates, safety considerations, and tips for a smooth experience.
Uber from Johannesburg Airport: The Pickup
Uber operates from the designated ride-hailing zones at O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Upon arrival, follow these steps to locate your Uber driver:
- Request Your Ride: Once you have collected your luggage and are ready to leave, open the Uber app and request a ride. Be sure to check the estimated wait time, as it can vary depending on demand.
- Follow the Signs: The airport has designated pickup areas for Uber and other ride-hailing services. These areas are separate from the taxi ranks. Look for signage directing you to the correct pickup point.
- Communicate with Your Driver: After your ride is confirmed, the app will provide details about the vehicle, including the car model, license plate, and driver’s name. If you have trouble finding your driver, you can call or message them directly through the app.
Uber Johannesburg Airport Fare Estimates
Uber pricing in Johannesburg is influenced by demand, time of day, and the type of service selected.
Here are some estimated fares for common destinations from O.R. Tambo:

Types of Uber Services Available
Uber offers a range of ride options at Johannesburg Airport, catering to different budgets and group sizes:
- UberX: The most economical choice, offering standard sedan rides for up to four passengers.
- UberXL: Ideal for larger groups or travelers with more luggage, accommodating up to six passengers.
- Uber Black: A premium service with high-end vehicles and professional drivers, suited for business travelers or those looking for extra comfort.
- Uber Van: Suitable for larger groups or families needing extra space.
Safety Considerations When Using Uber
Johannesburg, like many large cities, has safety concerns, so it’s important to take precautions when using Uber:
- Verify Your Driver: Always check that the license plate, car model, and driver’s name match the details provided in the Uber app before getting in the vehicle.
- Share Your Trip: Use the “Share Trip Status” feature in the app to send your ride details to a trusted contact.
- Wait in a Safe Area: Stay inside the terminal or in a well-lit, busy area while waiting for your driver. Avoid wandering alone in isolated parts of the airport.
- Keep Your Valuables Secure: Keep your phone, wallet, and luggage close to you and avoid displaying expensive items.
A Tip for a Smooth Uber Experience at JNB
- Check the App Before Exiting the Terminal: Since Uber drivers can only wait for a limited time in the pickup zone, it’s best to request your ride when you’re ready to leave.

Hi Uber,
How can you assist in getting Uber driver influx in front of our buildings close to OR Tambo to not park there. It is a disgrace as to how many drivers/cars are parked there. Camping chairs out and all. This need to be resolved asap and some other arrangement made where these drivers can park and wait. I took photos yesterday and they just disregard our requests to move. They do not even fear the Metro Police as they (Metro) just drive by as if it was nothing??? This is unacceptable…..I will be going further with this matter if no resolution is found.
Hi Rudy,
Welcome to Chick About Town! Thank you for your comment, but unfortunately, I am not in any way affiliated with Uber so cannot help you. Sorry that you are experiencing what your are going through. It must be infuriating!
