3. Merica Hotel
Merica Hotel is a large hotel in the centre of Nakuru town with good food and a large swimming pool.

Three months ago, my parents were traveling from Dar es Salaam to Kampala and stopped to visit me in Nairobi, for a couple of days.
On the following Sunday, they set off to continue on the rest of their journey, WITH me in tow.
Not one to be left behind, I decided that I would accompany them halfway until Kisumu.
My parents are cool travelers, you see. They never let travel ruffle their feathers, nor accept to travel at a pace that is beyond their comfort.
For this reason, taking a road trip with my parents is a real pleasure. They stop during the journey often, to take breaks and see interesting sights along the way.
First Stop: Nakuru, Kenya
On this trip to Kisumu, our first stop was Nakuru.
After a grueling journey due to the extremely rough road, my parents decided it was time to stop, relax, and have lunch.
I couldn’t have agreed more.
Ever the prepared tourist, I had my Rough Guide to Kenya in hand and quickly spewed off a list of places that I thought would be interesting to eat at.
As a group, we decided to try a restaurant called The Courtyard.
Using the map in the guidebook, we made our way to The Courtyard, only to find that it was no longer open.
A pedestrian, who we stopped to ask for information, recommended that we have lunch at Merica Hotel instead.
A short distance from where The Courtyard should have stood, we found Merica Hotel, a fully-fledged 4-star hotel, in the heart of Nakuru town.
We were hesitant to eat there because hotel food is rarely good, and we didn’t expect that hotels in Nakuru would be any different.
We also thought that we might encounter bad service or find the prices unnecessarily exorbitant. This was not the case, at all!

Hi. I live in Nakuru, and the Courtyard is still there. It is behind the Merica Hotel, though I am not sure why it would feature in a guide book. Nothing impressive.

I have stayed thre on three different occasions and the standard of the rooms seems to deteriorate with each visit. Grainy TV, faulty faucets, sometimes you get a room that will funnel in all the hustle-bustle of street activity from 5AM (Am not a morning person, rather nocturnal so this is the sweet end of my sleep). Most hotels in Nakuru dont have staying power.
I must say the bar is quite lively even on weeknights and bar service and breakfast were excellent each time.

Thanks so much for your feedback on Merica Hotel. I’ve never actually stayed there myself so I was quite curious about its rooms. Can you tell me how long your visits have spanned? In other words, has the deterioration been gradual or rather fast.
It’s sad about the deterioration but alas, I find that’s quite common in Africa. Once an initial investment is made, often not much is done to protect or maintian that initial investment. I think we need to change our mindsets and know that things rarely stay good without work or maintenance no matter how good they were at the beginning.

I usually come back home at least once a year. Last year I overdid it (3 times). I stayed consecutively 2004-2006. Gave up staying at Merica after the October 2006 visit. I was told by a friend that their rates are negotiable and I actually managed to actually get a sizable discount on this last stay. Incidentally, I witnessed a guy bargaining the rates for an executive room at Sarova Panafric last year. So I later challenged them to explain why I was charged more for a room of the same standard, I had actually noted the name of the manager who was negotiating. I got a groveling apology and was offered two free nights for my next visit which I haven’t taken up. Am coming to Kenya next week and am staying at a different hotel. Might actually check if that offer will materialize at the tail end of my visit.

So the decline was over a 2 year period. That’s really fast! What a shame.
Do try to redeem your offer of the free nights at Panafric – I think they honor that kind of stuff. I once got an offer of free dinner and drinks for two after an incident there (I can no longer remember what happened) and they actually honored it. Who knows?
I wish you luck and an enjoyable stay in Kenya once you arrive.
