Mzikayifane Elias Khumalo
Mzikayifane Elias Khumalo, widely known as “Mzi” Khumalo, was a South African politician and long-serving African National Congress (ANC) figure from the West Rand of Gauteng.
He was born on 1 January 1972 in what was then known as Witstinkhoutboom, now Badirile near Randfontein, and died on 10 August 2026, aged 54.
His Political Career
Khumalo’s political involvement began relatively young. During the 1980s and early 1990s, he was active in student and youth politics, including the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in Mohlakeng and later the ANC Youth League and broader ANC structures.
Over the years, he became increasingly prominent in West Rand politics.
His local-government career included:
- Serving as a councillor in the Randfontein Transitional Local Council
- Working as a political adviser to the Executive Mayor of the West Rand District Municipality
- Serving as political adviser to the Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature
- Becoming Speaker of Randfontein Local Municipality
- Serving as Executive Mayor of Randfontein from 2015 to 2016
- Becoming the inaugural Executive Mayor of Rand West City Local Municipality after its creation in 2016, serving until 2019.
His move into provincial politics came in 2019, when he was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
He subsequently became Chief Whip of the ANC caucus and Majority Party in the legislature.
MEC in the Gauteng Government
One of the most prominent positions of his career came in October 2022, when Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi appointed him as an MEC.
His portfolio combined several areas:
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, e-Government, and Research and Development.
He held the MEC position until the changes following the 2024 Gauteng provincial election.
Rather than leaving provincial politics, he returned to the legislature.
After the 2024 election, Khumalo became Chairperson of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). He remained in that position until his death.
His Death in 2026
Khumalo died in the early hours of Monday, 10 August 2026, following what was described as a short illness. His death appears to have been unexpected, given that he was still an active member of the Gauteng legislature and chairing a portfolio committee.
His death prompted tributes from senior South African political figures. Deputy President Paul Mashatile described him as a committed public servant and paid tribute to his decades of service.
President Cyril Ramaphosa granted him a Special Provincial Official Funeral, Category 2, recognizing his contribution to government and the people of Gauteng.
The South African flag was ordered to fly at half-mast across Gauteng on the day of his funeral. He was laid to rest at Heroes Acre at West Park Cemetery on 15 August 2026.
What Stands Out About His Career
Khumalo’s career is interesting because it wasn’t simply a rise through provincial government. He spent much of his political life moving through local government, party structures, and provincial government.
He had particularly deep roots in the West Rand. He came from the area, became involved in its political structures, served as mayor of Randfontein and then became the first mayor of the newly established Rand West City. His later provincial positions gave him considerably wider political influence, but his West Rand connection remained an important part of his public identity.
By the time of his death, he had accumulated roughly three decades of political and public-service experience, spanning the transition from apartheid-era youth activism through democratic local government and into senior provincial politics.
One particularly notable aspect is that he died while still politically active, rather than after a long retirement. At 54, he was still a sitting MPL and committee chairperson, making his death a relatively early end to a lengthy political career.
