Oscillococcinum vs Tamiflu

Oscillococcinum and Tamiflu are both medications used to treat influenza (the flu), but they work in different ways and have different levels of scientific support.

  1. Oscillococcinum: It is a homeopathic remedy made from duck liver and heart, and it’s claimed to relieve symptoms of the flu, such as body aches, fever, chills, and fatigue. However, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited and controversial. Many studies have shown no significant difference between Oscillococcinum and a placebo in relieving flu symptoms. The theory behind its mechanism of action is not well-established in the scientific community, and it is generally not recommended as a first-line treatment for the flu.
  2. Tamiflu (Oseltamivir): This is an antiviral medication that works by inhibiting the neuraminidase enzyme, which the influenza virus needs to spread within the body. Tamiflu can reduce the duration and severity of flu symptoms if taken within the first 48 hours of symptom onset. It can also help prevent flu in people who have been exposed to the virus. Tamiflu is supported by robust scientific evidence and is recommended by health authorities, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for the treatment of influenza.

In summary, Tamiflu is a pharmaceutical medication with strong scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating the flu, especially when taken early, while Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy with limited scientific evidence and controversy surrounding its efficacy.

It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any medication, especially for the treatment of a potentially serious illness like influenza.

I’d always heard that the flu was untreatable: you just had to keep yourself as comfortable as possible and wait for your body to fight off the virus.

In this guest post, by Lauren Walsh, I learned that this is no longer the case and that there exists an FDA-approved anti-viral drug called Tamiflu that can help your body to combat the flu. Keep reading to find out more.

Enjoy!

Most of us have had some form of influenza or the other.

It’s irritating and stops you from going on with your life as you normally would.

Symptoms like a sore throat, cough, runny nose/cold, aches, watery eyes, tiredness, fever, chills, and a stuffy nose are common when you’ve got the flu.

Medication helps ease the symptoms of influenza within a day or two and allows people to continue their healthy day-to-day lives with minimal irritation.

The flu is a viral infection that spreads throughout the body and can hamper bodily functions.

Most people do not understand the difference between actual influenza and the symptoms of the flu.

Just having a cough, cold, or fever is not the flu.

The symptoms of the actual flu are usually a lot worse than other flu-like symptoms and tend to get increasingly serious if not treated in time.

The flu is caused by one of three viruses: the influenza virus type A , B, or C.

Types of flu virus

There are different strains of influenza today, and symptoms keep changing according to the strain.

Most flu symptoms only start after 3–4 days of contracting the virus, so it is possible for the disease to spread unknowingly before signs of any symptoms.

Once treatment begins, flu symptoms can be controlled within a day or two, but it usually takes about a week or two to completely rid the body of the flu virus.

Ways to Fight the Flu

Drink plenty of fluids: Drinking fresh juices helps keep the body hydrated and refreshed. Also, indulge in broth-based soups like chicken soup.

Get the flu vaccine as early as possible: Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to avoid getting the flu virus.

Breathe in steam: One of the best remedies for a cold is to breathe in a little steam. If you want, you could add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to help ease the sinus and your nostrils.

Take a painkiller for body aches: Sometimes body ache can be the first symptom of a virus. If you are unsure, take a painkiller like ibuprofen and catch a quick nap. It can work wonders!

Expectorant: Take an expectorant to ease your cough. Over-the-counter cough tabs help immensely in alleviating the itch in your throat.

Nose drops: Most pharmacies and drug stores keep a stock of saline nose drops or sprays that help in temporarily clearing the nasal passage and mucus buildup. These are usually safe for children too. Put a few drops in one nostril and gently blow the mucus out. Repeat the process for the other nostril.

Take medication: Medicine like Tamiflu, an anti-viral, helps tremendously in clearing out all the symptoms of flu and blocking the infection by clearing it out.
