Barbarians Trailer (Barbarians Netflix Trailer)

Barbarians (original title: Barbaren) is a 2020 German historical war drama television series created by Andreas Heckmann, Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf starring Laurence Rupp, Jeanne Goursaud and David Schütter.

The series is a fictional account of events during the Roman Empire’s occupation of Germania and the resulting rebellion of the Germanic tribes led by Arminius.

The series was renewed for season 2 on November 10, 2020.

Barbarians Series Plot

The story takes place during the Roman occupation of Magna Germania in 9 AD, where the Germanic tribes are oppressed by the empire’s heavy taxes and demands for tribute.

Attempts to form a unified German resistance are hampered by petty in-fighting between the tribal chieftains, and the selfish aspirations of certain tribesmen desiring peace with Rome.

Arminius, an eques in the Roman Imperial army, is a Cherusci who was given away as a hostage to Rome when he was a child, along with his younger brother Flavus, by his father Segimer to ensure peace between his tribe and Rome.

He returns to Germania to help Publius Quinctilius Varus maintain order in the region, but upon seeing the atrocities inflicted by Roman soldiers on his former people, he becomes the new chieftain of the Cherusci tribe, and ignites a rebellion by finally uniting the tribes with the help of Thusnelda and Folkwin Wolfspeer, his two best friends during childhood.

These events eventually culminate in a massive ambush of three Roman legions at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where the Germans emerge victorious.

  1. If the rest of the shows are as wrong and the first one then not only should you be taken off the air but be taken to court as well. Hannibal was not black. Statement of fact. so why are you showing him as black. I shall undertake every move that I can to get this program removed. You have harmed people by this act. Best you do some research so you can see who will be upset by your actions.

      1. Hi Russel and Lamia,

Welcome to Chick About Town! I see the first episode has angered quite a few people. I haven’t watched it yet, because it hasn’t started to air in my territory, though I am sure looking forward to seeing it and seeing if it is indeed as far from the truth as some have said it is.

  2. Just saw the beginning of the first episode. Hannibal was of Phoenician descent and not sub-Saharan African. The Phoenicians came from Palestine and established the city of Carthage. As such he should look like a Palestinian. This is the second time that he has been inaccurately portrayed in a TV series. Just noticed that someone else made a more forceful comment about this.

    1. Hi William,

Welcome to Chick About Town! Thanks for the clarification. I wonder why the series directors chose to take this particular artistic license.

      Biche
