Here’s how the reservation process works with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) for visiting their national parks in Tanzania:

Reservation System & TANAPA Online Payment

TANAPA has an online reservation and payment system that tour operators and travel agents must use when arranging park entry and services.

When you make a booking through the system you submit information and payment; the reservation itself is considered an offer — it does not guarantee acceptance until TANAPA has confirmed it.

You will find that separate bookings are required for different services: for example, entry permits, campsite reservations, mountain hut stays or park-owned accommodation.

What You’ll Typically Book

• Park entry permits: These cover access to the park for you and your vehicle or group.
• Accommodation inside the park: If you’re staying in a rest house, mountain hut, tented camp or similar in-park facility, you’ll need to book that specifically.
• Special campsites: These are also bookable ahead of time, especially in more remote or less-frequently used sites.
• Vehicle permits: If you are driving into a park (self-drive or via a rental) you’ll need to ensure the correct vehicle permit/entry is in place.

Key Practical Points & Tips

• Even though the online system exists, for self-drive travellers it is often said that there is no strict quota preventing access — you can arrive and pay at the gate in many cases.
• Nevertheless, booking ahead is highly recommended especially for accommodation inside the parks and for busy seasons.
• Make sure you pay attention to supporting documentation: for example non-resident children ages 5-15 may be asked to upload passports or work permits as part of the booking process.
• Confirm accepted payment methods in advance: TANAPA generally accepts credit cards (Visa/MasterCard) for entry fees and permits. Cash may not always be accepted or may be restricted.
• If you are booking via a tour operator, they typically handle the reservation system on your behalf, which simplifies things for you.
• If you want to stay in a mountain hut (for example if you’re hiking) you must book that via the respective park’s online system.

What a Special Campsite Is

A special campsite in a Tanzania National Park is a temporary, exclusive campsite set up in a scenic or remote part of the park for one group only at a time.

At a special campsite:

• Only your group is allowed to camp there during your reserved nights.
• There are no permanent structures, toilets, or facilities like you find at public campsites.
• The setting is intended to be more private and closer to true wilderness than a regular public campsite.
• You usually bring your own camping gear (tents, mattresses) or have these provided by your safari operator.

How Special Campsites Compare to Other Types

• Public campsites: Shared by multiple groups at the same time. They usually have basic facilities like toilets, pits for kitchen use, water points and sometimes picnic tables.
• Special campsites: Exclusive to one group, with privacy and wilderness feel, but no built permanent facilities.
• Seasonal campsites: Set up for a longer period (like a whole season), also usually without permanent structures.
• Fly campsites: Used during walking safaris and set up as part of that experience, usually very basic.

In Lake Manyara, examples include sites like Endala, Msasa or Bagayo.

Booking & Access

• You must book special campsites in advance through the official TANAPA online reservation system or via an authorised safari operator. They’re not places you can just drive up and expect a spot to be available.
• When you have a confirmation voucher, you present that at the park gate on arrival. The campsite booking will be verified before you drive into the park.

Exact prices vary by park and sometimes by season, but the idea is:

• Special campsites cost more than basic/public campsites, reflecting their privacy and exclusive location.
• For example in Lake Manyara National Park, special campsite fees in peak season are higher than standard campsite fees for adults.
